The Chase Sapphire Preferred® wins on both fronts: it comes out ahead in year one on the welcome offer and stays ahead every year after. Short term or long, it is the stronger pick on the numbers.

On perks and redemptions, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® carries the heavier credit stack (about $230 a year). Weigh those against the fee, since credits and lounge access only count if you will actually use them.

Transfer partners and point value

The Capital One Quicksilver Student earns Capital One miles, which transfers to Air Canada, Avianca LifeMiles, Turkish, British Airways, and Emirates. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® earns Chase Ultimate Rewards, reaching World of Hyatt, United, Air Canada, Southwest, and British Airways Avios. Most transfers are 1:1 on both, so the partners themselves, not the ratios, are what separate them.

The standout difference is the crown-jewel partner: for the Capital One Quicksilver Student it is Turkish and Avianca for cheap Star Alliance premium cabins; for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® it is World of Hyatt at 1:1, widely considered the single best hotel transfer in points. Pick the program whose best partners match the trips you would actually book.

These aren’t really competitors so much as different rungs on the ladder: the Quicksilver Student is a first card, the Sapphire Preferred is a travel card for established credit.

The Quicksilver Student is easy to get as a student and earns a simple 1.5%. The Sapphire Preferred is a big step up in earning and redemption value, 3x categories and transferable points, but you’ll need good credit and a willingness to pay $95. Most people hold the Student first and graduate to a card like the Preferred later.

The verdict

If you’re a student or new to credit, the Quicksilver Student is the right starting point, it’s approvable, free, and earns a real 1.5% while you build history, and its rewards can later pool into Capital One miles. Trying to get a Sapphire Preferred before your credit is ready usually isn’t realistic anyway.

Once your credit is established and you want travel value, the Sapphire Preferred is a major upgrade, its 3x on dining and groceries and transferable points to World of Hyatt can be worth multiples of the Student’s flat cash. The natural path is to start with the Quicksilver Student, build your score, then move up to the Preferred when you’re ready to travel on points. They’re a first card and a graduation card, not true rivals.

The bottom line
Capital One Quicksilver Student to build credit as a student. Chase Sapphire Preferred once you qualify and want 3x categories and transferable travel points, the natural upgrade.
