The verdict
If you book hotels and flights directly and often, the Autograph Journey out-earns the Preferred by a wide margin, 5x on hotels and 4x on airlines are rates you usually only see on premium cards, and the $50 airline credit chips at the fee. For a travel-heavy spender who books direct, it’s a lot of earning for $95.
For most people, though, the Sapphire Preferred is the safer, higher-ceiling pick. Its 3x reaches the everyday categories you spend in every week, not just when you travel, and World of Hyatt gives it a redemption ceiling Wells Fargo’s younger program can’t yet match.
