The Wells Fargo Active Cash® wins on both fronts: it comes out ahead in year one on the welcome offer and stays ahead every year after. Short term or long, it is the stronger pick on the numbers.

Perks, credits, and redemptions
| Perks | Discover it® Student Cash Back | Wells Fargo Active Cash® |
|---|---|---|
| Lounge access | None | None |
| Annual credits | None | None |
| Points & redemptions | Cash back only | Transferable (paired with a premium card) |
On perks and redemptions, the Wells Fargo Active Cash® earns transferable points with a higher redemption ceiling, while the other is capped nearer a flat cent. Weigh those against the fee, since credits and lounge access only count if you will actually use them.
Transfer partners and point value
Only the Wells Fargo Active Cash® earns transferable points. Its Wells Fargo Rewards move to Air France-KLM, Avianca, British Airways Avios, and Choice, where a point can be worth several cents on a premium-cabin redemption, far above its cash value. The Discover it® Student Cash Back pays flat cash back, worth about a cent, so its ceiling is nearer a penny per point no matter how you redeem.
Both are no-fee cash cards, but one is a student card with a rotating 5% and a first-year match, the other a flat 2% card for good credit.
The Discover it Student can be extraordinary in year one, its Cashback Match effectively doubles everything, but it takes quarterly activation and has category caps. The Active Cash just pays 2% on everything, forever, with a welcome bonus and no upkeep. Effort-for-more vs simple-and-steady.

The verdict
If you’re a student who’ll activate the categories, the Discover it Student is hard to beat in year one, the Cashback Match turns 5% into an effective 10% and 1% into 2% for twelve months, and it builds credit at the same time. For a student willing to do a little quarterly upkeep, it’s exceptional value early on.
If you want dependable cash with zero effort, the Active Cash is the better everyday card, a flat 2% on everything, a welcome bonus, and phone protection, with nothing to track. The honest split: students chasing maximum first-year value take the Discover it Student; anyone who values simplicity and a strong flat rate takes the Active Cash, and a student could even start on Discover and graduate to the Active Cash later.
