American Express Credit Card Application Rules
Welcome bonus rules: once per lifetime and family
Each Amex card welcome bonus is generally once per lifetime, and cancelling and reapplying does not reset it. On top of that, the family rule blocks the bonus on a cheaper card in a family if you have held a more premium one, so the Membership Rewards cards should be opened Green, then Gold, then Platinum.
Pop-up jail
Before you submit an Amex application, the site usually shows a pop-up stating whether you will earn the welcome bonus. If it says you are not eligible, that is pop-up jail, and you should not apply because you would get the card with no bonus. Run the Amex pre-qualification check first; it flags eligibility with a soft pull.
Approval velocity and card limits
Amex limits how fast you can be approved: roughly one new Amex card every 5 days (the 1/5 rule) and no more than two credit cards in 90 days (the 2/90 rule). You can also hold only about 5 Amex credit cards and 10 charge cards at once. Too many applications, or too much total credit already extended to you, can trigger a financial review.
Protecting your points and bonus
Membership Rewards points can be forfeited if you close your last Membership Rewards-earning card, so downgrade rather than cancel, or transfer the points out first, if you want to keep them. And as always, meet the minimum spend within the window and do not cancel before the bonus posts. See how to protect your welcome bonus.
Financial reviews and retention
Amex can place an account under a financial review, temporarily freezing it while it verifies your income, sometimes by requesting access to your tax records. It is usually triggered by a sudden spending spike and is rare for ordinary spenders. At renewal, check your account online or via chat for a retention offer before paying a fee, and downgrade rather than cancel to preserve your history. See reconsideration, retention, and shutdowns.
