Buy Now, Pay Later vs Credit Cards
What BNPL is
Buy now, pay later services like Affirm, Klarna, and Afterpay split a purchase into a few payments, often four over six weeks with no interest if you pay on time. It is easy at checkout and requires no card, but longer plans can carry interest, and missed payments bring fees.
What you give up
BNPL earns no rewards, rarely includes purchase protection or extended warranty, and its credit reporting is inconsistent, so it may not build credit and a missed payment can still hurt it. A credit card paid in full earns rewards, gives you a grace period, and adds purchase protections and dispute rights BNPL usually lacks.
Which to use
If you pay in full each month, a rewards card wins on every front. BNPL can make sense for a single large purchase you want to spread out interest-free and will definitely pay on schedule, or if you are avoiding a card to control spending. Just do not stack multiple BNPL plans, which is how people lose track and overspend.
