The short answer: Most dealers will not let you charge a whole car to a credit card because of the processing fees, but many accept a card for part of the purchase (often a few thousand dollars), sometimes with a surcharge. Charging the down payment can be worth it for rewards or a welcome bonus if there is no fee.
What dealers allow
Car dealers pay a percentage fee on card transactions, so they rarely let you charge the full price. Most cap card payments at a few thousand dollars, often toward the down payment, and some add a surcharge to cover their processing cost. Policies vary widely, so ask the specific dealer what they accept on a card.
When it is worth charging part
Putting a few thousand dollars of a car purchase on a card can be a great way to hit a welcome-bonus minimum spend or earn rewards, but only if the dealer charges no surcharge. If they add 3 percent, that usually exceeds the rewards, so it is not worth it. Do the math: rewards earned minus any surcharge.
Do not finance a car on a card
Charging part of a car for rewards and paying it off immediately is fine; carrying a car-sized balance at a card APR is a costly mistake, since card interest dwarfs an auto loan rate. Use a card for the rewards on a portion you can pay in full, and finance the rest with an auto loan if needed.
Frequently asked questions
Can you buy a car with a credit card?
Rarely the whole car, because dealers pay processing fees. Many accept a card for part of the purchase (often a few thousand dollars, sometimes with a surcharge). Charging the down payment can earn rewards if there is no fee.
