Can You Combine Points From Two Different Banks?
This guide explains why bank points cannot be combined across issuers, what you can combine, and how transfer partners let separate currencies converge.
Why bank points do not mix
Chase, American Express, Citi, and Capital One each run their own rewards currency, and those programs are closed to one another. There is no mechanism to transfer or merge one bank points into another bank balance, because each is a separate loyalty system with its own partners and rules.
What you can combine
Within a single bank, you can usually move points between your own cards, so multiple Chase cards or multiple Amex cards can feed one balance, which is the basis of the popular card trifectas. Some programs also allow pooling or transfers between household members. What you cannot do is bridge two different banks.
Where two currencies can meet
The workaround is transfer partners. If two banks both transfer to the same airline or hotel program, you can send points from each into that one loyalty account and combine them there to reach a redemption. This is a common tactic for topping up a balance, covered in which bank points transfer best and using transfer bonuses.
- Each bank rewards currency is a separate, closed program.
- You cannot merge points from two different banks into one balance.
- You can combine points across cards from the same bank.
- Household pooling is allowed in some programs.
- Shared airline and hotel partners are where two currencies can meet.
