Do You Earn Miles on Basic Economy Fares?
This guide explains how basic economy earns miles, where it falls short, and what you still get.
How basic economy earns miles
Most US airline programs are revenue-based, meaning you earn redeemable miles as a multiple of the fare you paid, not the distance flown. Because basic economy is the lowest fare, it earns the fewest miles, and airlines often assign it a lower earning multiple or reduced elite-qualifying credit on top of that. So the same route earns less on a basic ticket than on a standard economy fare.
Where it falls short for status
If you are chasing elite status, basic economy can be a poor choice, since some airlines award little or no elite-qualifying credit on those fares. For a frequent flyer building status, the miles and credit lost on basic economy can outweigh the fare savings, which is why status-seekers often avoid it.
What you still earn
The airline miles are the only thing reduced. When you buy a basic economy ticket, the credit card you pay with earns its normal rewards at your travel or base rate, unaffected by the fare class, and if it is a paid ticket you still earn card rewards and airline miles together, just fewer airline miles. Weigh the fare savings against the miles and status you give up.
