Do You Earn Rewards at a Pawn Shop?
Buying versus borrowing
A pawn shop does two very different things. When you buy secondhand merchandise, that is a normal purchase that earns your card’s base rate. When you take a pawn loan, borrowing cash against an item you leave as collateral, no purchase happens, so there are no rewards, only loan fees and interest. Selling an item to the shop pays you cash and has nothing to do with card rewards.
How pawn purchases code
A pawn shop rings up purchases under a pawn-shop retail category code, outside the usual bonus buckets like dining and groceries, so most cards earn only the base rate. Be aware that some pawn transactions, especially anything cash-like, can be treated as a cash advance, which earns nothing and adds a fee.
The best card for pawn purchases
Since pawn shops offer no bonus category, a strong flat-rate card earns the most on merchandise you buy there, if the shop accepts cards at all. Value any points at a flat 1 cent and see the flat-rate earners in best cash back cards.
