Do You Earn Rewards on Zelle Payments?
This guide explains why Zelle earns no rewards and how it differs from other payment apps.
Why Zelle earns nothing
Zelle is built for direct bank-to-bank transfers and only connects to a checking account, not a credit card. Because there is no card charge involved, there is nothing for a rewards card to earn on, no matter how much you send. Zelle is designed to move money instantly and for free, which is its advantage, but rewards are not part of the deal.
How it differs from other apps
This is the opposite of Venmo, PayPal, and Cash App, which do let you fund payments with a credit card. Those can earn rewards on merchant purchases, though sending money to friends with a card usually adds a fee of around three percent. Zelle sidesteps fees entirely by not touching cards, at the cost of any rewards.
What to use instead
If your goal is simply to send money to a person for free, Zelle is excellent, just do not expect rewards. If your goal is to earn rewards on a payment, you need an actual card transaction: pay a merchant that accepts a card or a card-funded app, not a bank transfer. And never try to route a credit card through a workaround to earn on Zelle, since there is no legitimate way to do it.
- Zelle links to a bank account, not a credit card.
- You cannot fund Zelle with a credit card.
- No card transaction means no rewards.
- Zelle is free but earns nothing.
- Venmo, PayPal, and Cash App differ, with card funding for a fee.
