Travel Status Matches You Can Actually Get Right Now
The two ways status matches work
A status match exists because loyalty programs love poaching each other’s elites, betting that a taste of status pulls your spending over. Some are automatic reciprocal partnerships where you link two accounts and the status flows both ways forever. Others are limited-time offers where you upload proof of your current status and get a trial that you keep only by flying or staying enough during a challenge window. One rule catches people out: most programs only match status you truly earned, so status you got from a credit card or a previous match usually does not qualify to match onward.
Reciprocal partnerships you just link
These are the closest thing to the Marriott and JAL deal, standing partnerships where linking your accounts matches your status automatically. They are free and there is no reason not to link if you hold status on either side.
| Partnership | What you get |
|---|---|
| Marriott Bonvoy and United (RewardsPlus) | United Premier Gold or higher matches to Marriott Gold; Marriott Titanium or higher matches to United Premier Silver |
| Marriott Bonvoy and Japan Airlines | Marriott Titanium or Ambassador earn JAL Crystal, which is oneworld Ruby; JAL Sapphire and above match into Marriott status |
| Marriott Bonvoy and Singapore KrisFlyer | KrisFlyer Elite Gold matches to Marriott Gold instantly; KrisFlyer Silver earns Marriott Silver with a short stay challenge |
The full breakdown of the newest one is in our Marriott and JAL status match guide.
The casino angle
Las Vegas casinos run some of the most generous matches around, because a comped room is cheap next to what they hope you lose at the tables. Wyndham Rewards and Caesars Rewards have a standing reciprocal match: link the two and your earned status carries across, currently good through the end of 2027. MGM Rewards runs its own match where you send proof of hotel or airline status and get a 90-day trial of MGM Gold or Platinum. Note that MGM ended its long partnership with Hyatt and now works with Marriott, so the old Hyatt and MGM link is gone. As always, these want status you earned, not status a card handed you.
Airline matches you apply for
Airline matches come and go, so the move is to match right before a big trip when you can requalify by flying. Alaska, now branded Atmos Rewards, runs a reliable one: upload a screenshot of your status with another airline and you get matched, then keep it by earning base points on Alaska and Hawaiian flights, 5,000 for Silver, 10,000 for Gold, 20,000 for Platinum. Hyatt runs a corporate match with a challenge you can register for through the end of 2026 that grants Explorist for 90 days. Worth knowing what changed: Turkish Airlines, long the easy button for a free match, no longer runs a public one. For live offers, sites like StatusMatcher track what is open right now.
The instant one: status your card already grants
The most overlooked path skips the match entirely, because your credit card may already hand you status outright. The Amex Platinum grants Hilton Gold and Marriott Bonvoy Gold, the Bonvoy Brilliant grants Marriott Platinum, the Hilton Aspire grants Hilton Diamond, and IHG’s premier card grants Platinum, all with no match and no stays required. A few international airline co-brands do the same for airline status, handing you a tier the day you are approved. This is often faster and stickier than chasing a match, so start here. See hotel elite status from credit cards and airline elite status from credit cards.
How to play it
Do the free things first: link the reciprocal partnerships you qualify for and take whatever status your cards already grant, since neither costs anything. Save the apply-for matches for when a trip lets you requalify, so a 90-day trial turns into a year of real status. And keep the earned-status rule in mind, because matching a card-granted or previously matched status usually fails. Before chasing any of it, decide whether the perks are worth the effort in is elite status worth it.
