Wells Fargo Credit Card Application Rules
The 6-month rule
Wells Fargo generally will not approve a new Wells Fargo credit card if you have opened one in the past six months. The Bilt Mastercard and the Signify Business Cash are commonly cited exceptions that do not count toward it.
Welcome bonus timing
Beyond approvals, Wells Fargo applies bonus spacing: you generally must wait about 6 months between earning a welcome bonus on any two Wells Fargo cards, and you can earn the same card bonus again only after a long wait, commonly cited as 48 months. Plan which Wells Fargo card to get first.
Inquiry sensitivity
Wells Fargo also watches recent new accounts across all issuers and may decline applicants who have opened many cards in the past 24 months, in the spirit of Chase 5/24. A clean recent history helps.
Pre-qualification and keeping your rewards
Wells Fargo offers a pre-qualification check that uses a soft pull, so you can gauge approval odds without a hit to your score before applying. Its rewards do not expire while your account is open, and there is a reconsideration line if you are denied. As always, downgrade rather than cancel to preserve your history. See reconsideration and retention.
