When Do Credit Card Points Post to Your Account?
This guide explains when everyday rewards post, when welcome bonuses arrive, and the difference between pending and posted points.
When everyday rewards post
On most cards, the points or cash back you earn during a billing cycle are tallied and posted when that statement closes, so they show up in a batch rather than one purchase at a time. A minority of cards post rewards at the transaction level, closer to real time. Either way, rewards often appear as pending first and become available once they fully post.
When welcome bonuses arrive
A welcome bonus does not post the moment you hit the spending requirement. It typically lands one to two billing cycles after you meet the minimum spend, once the qualifying statement closes. If it has been longer than that, it is worth a call to the issuer to confirm your spend counted.
Pending versus posted
Pending rewards are earned but not yet finalized, so you generally cannot redeem or transfer them until they post. This lag also lets issuers reverse rewards cleanly if you return a purchase before the points settle, which is one reason to let big rewards post fully before you redeem them.
- Most rewards post after the statement closes each cycle.
- Some cards credit points at the time of the transaction.
- Welcome bonuses usually post one to two cycles after you qualify.
- Pending rewards are not yet available to use.
- Returns can reverse rewards before they fully post.
