American Express® Platinum for Morgan Stanley Review
Overview
The Amex Platinum for Morgan Stanley is the same premium card as the regular Platinum, with the same fee, credits, and lounge access, but it comes with one feature that changes the whole equation: a Morgan Stanley Platinum CashPlus account can pay you an $895 Annual Engagement Bonus every year, which fully offsets the annual fee.
That turns my usual 'cancel after year one' verdict on its head. If you already bank with Morgan Stanley or are willing to, this is the version of the Platinum worth keeping long term, because the fee can effectively be zero.
Think twice if: you do not want a Morgan Stanley relationship, because without the Platinum CashPlus account the Annual Engagement Bonus is off the table and it is just a $895 Platinum.
Our 4.0 out of 5 rating
Each score weighs the rewards rate, value after the annual fee, welcome offer, points flexibility, and perks, with every point valued at a flat 1 cent. This is our editorial assessment to help you compare cards, not a guarantee of approval or of the value you will get.
Rewards: how it earns
Earning is identical to the standard Platinum: 5x on flights and prepaid hotels booked through Amex, and a flat 1x on nearly everything else, so it is a travel card, not an everyday card. The Morgan Stanley twist is redemption, you can cash out Membership Rewards points into your Morgan Stanley or E*TRADE account at 1 cent each, a clean floor if you do not want to deal with transfer partners.
| Category | Rate | Notes |

The fine print on rates: Available only to Morgan Stanley clients; a Morgan Stanley or E*TRADE brokerage account is required. Morgan Stanley Platinum CashPlus account holders receive an $895 Annual Engagement Bonus that offsets the card's annual fee.

Pros and cons
- $895 Annual Engagement Bonus can fully offset the fee via Platinum CashPlus
- All the standard Platinum credits, lounges, and 5x travel earning
- Cash out Membership Rewards to Morgan Stanley or E*TRADE at 1 cent each
- Earns transferable Amex Membership Rewards points
- The fee offset requires a Platinum CashPlus account with real balance and deposit requirements
- Requires a Morgan Stanley or E*TRADE relationship
- Earns just 1x outside of travel and flights
- Smaller welcome bonus than the regular Platinum's elevated offers
The welcome bonus
The welcome bonus is currently 80,000 points after $12,000 in six months, solid but smaller than the elevated offers the regular Platinum sometimes runs. The real draw here is not the sign-up bonus, it is the recurring fee offset.
Is the annual fee worth it?
The fee is $895 like the standard card, but here is the difference that matters: hold a Morgan Stanley Platinum CashPlus account and you receive an $895 Annual Engagement Bonus deposited each year, which cancels the fee out entirely. The catch is qualifying, the Platinum CashPlus account itself has a monthly fee that is only waived if you meet its requirements, generally a $25,000 average daily balance, $5,000 in monthly deposits, an additional Morgan Stanley investment account, and online enrollment. If you can clear that, you keep a full Platinum, credits, lounges, and all, for effectively nothing. See how to get the Amex Platinum fee-free through Morgan Stanley for the exact playbook.

If you have, or would open, a Morgan Stanley or E*TRADE relationship and can meet the Platinum CashPlus requirements, this is the smartest way to hold an Amex Platinum, because the Annual Engagement Bonus makes the fee disappear year after year. That solves the single biggest problem with the regular Platinum.
If you have no interest in a Morgan Stanley account, skip it and treat the standard Platinum as a one-year bonus play instead. Without the CashPlus offset, this is just another $895 card that earns 1x on almost everything.
