Overview
The World of Hyatt card is a standout among hotel co-brands, largely because Hyatt points are among the most valuable hotel currencies out there. For a $95 fee you get an annual free night, elite status, and a path to earning genuinely valuable Hyatt points.
If you stay at Hyatt, this is one of the few hotel cards I am comfortable recommending, because the underlying points punch above their weight and the free night tends to cover the fee.
Think twice if: you do not stay at Hyatt, since the points and free night are tied to their program.
Our 3.5 out of 5 rating
Each score weighs the rewards rate, value after the annual fee, welcome offer, points flexibility, and perks, with every point valued at a flat 1 cent. This is our editorial assessment to help you compare cards, not a guarantee of approval or of the value you will get.
Rewards: how it earns
You earn well at Hyatt plus bonuses on dining, travel, and fitness spending, in World of Hyatt points. Unlike most hotel currencies, Hyatt points hold strong value, so earning them is genuinely worthwhile, and the annual free night at a category 1-4 property adds more. Use it for Hyatt stays and the bonus categories.
| Category | Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dining and restaurants | 2x | Bonus category |
| Travel | 2x | Bonus category |
| Groceries | 1x | Base rate |
| Gas | 1x | Base rate |
| Streaming | 1x | Base rate |
| Everything else | 1x | Everything else |
Brand and bonus rates: beyond the everyday categories above, this card also earns:
- 4x Hyatt points at Hyatt hotels
Every point and mile above is valued at a flat 1 cent, the same honest standard we use for every card. Run your own spending through the calculator to see what this card would actually return for you.
Pros and cons
- Hyatt points are among the most valuable hotel currencies
- Annual free night that tends to beat the fee
- Elite status and status-earning with Hyatt
- Points locked to Hyatt
- $95 annual fee
- Little value if you do not stay at Hyatt
The welcome bonus
The welcome bonus is solid: up to 60,000 points after $3,000 in three months. Because Hyatt points are valuable, that bonus goes further than a similar number of points in most other hotel programs.
Is it worth the annual fee?
The $95 fee is easy to justify with the annual free night, which at a decent Hyatt property can be worth more than $95, plus you earn progress toward Hyatt elite status. As long as you use the free night, this card pays for itself for a Hyatt guest.
First-year value vs ongoing value
| Welcome bonus | Up to 75,000 Bonus Points |
| To earn it | $5,000 in 3 months |
| Est. first-year value* | $995 |
| Est. ongoing value / yr* | $245 |
The welcome bonus makes year one the high point: roughly $995 in value once you count the bonus, this card’s rewards, and its credits, minus the $95 fee. After that, the honest figure is about $245 a year, so judge whether it earns its keep on the ongoing number, not the first-year headline.
*First-year value counts the welcome bonus, estimated rewards, and annual credits, minus the annual fee; ongoing value is a typical year after. Every point at a flat 1 cent, on average spending.
Benefits and protections
Beyond the rewards, the perks and protections worth knowing about include:
- 1 free night award every cardmember anniversary (Cat 1 to 4)
- Automatic World of Hyatt Discoverist status
- 5 qualifying night credits toward next status tier each year
- No foreign transaction fees
- Trip cancellation/interruption insurance
Statement credits
- 1 free night award (Category 1 to 4) every cardmember anniversary
Who should get it, and who should skip it
If you stay at Hyatt, this card is a strong pick, valuable points, a fee-covering free night, and useful status make it one of the better hotel cards available.
If Hyatt is not in your travel plans, the locked points will not help you, and a transferable card, which can move points to Hyatt anyway, may serve you better. But for Hyatt loyalists, this is a genuine winner.
