Discover it® Secured Credit Card Review
Overview
The Discover it Secured is, in my opinion, the best secured card there is, and it is the card I point people to when they want to build or rebuild credit. It does two things almost no other secured card does: it earns real rewards, and it actually graduates you to an unsecured card and refunds your deposit.
You put down a refundable deposit that becomes your limit, then you earn 2% at gas and restaurants and 1% everywhere else, and Discover matches all of it in your first year. No annual fee, no games. This is what you get instead of a fee-harvester card.
Think twice if: you shop where Discover is not accepted, or you need the card immediately, since applications have been temporarily paused.
Our 4.5 out of 5 rating
Each score weighs the rewards rate, value after the annual fee, welcome offer, points flexibility, and perks, with every point valued at a flat 1 cent. This is our editorial assessment to help you compare cards, not a guarantee of approval or of the value you will get.
Rewards: how it earns
You earn 2% cash back at gas stations and restaurants on up to $1,000 in combined spend each quarter, and 1% on everything else, and Discover matches every dollar of it at the end of your first year. Rewards on a secured card at all are rare; rewards this good are unheard of, which is a big part of why it is the one to beat.
| Category | Rate | Notes |

| Gas | 2x | Bonus category |
| Groceries | 1x | Base rate |

The fine print on rates: The gold-standard secured card: it actually earns rewards and graduates to unsecured. A refundable deposit from $200 sets your limit. NOTE: Discover temporarily paused new applications in 2026 after the Capital One acquisition, and has said it will relaunch the card.
Every point and mile above is valued at a flat 1 cent, the same honest standard we use for every card. Run your own spending through the calculator to see what this card would actually return for you.
Pros and cons
- Earns 2% at gas and restaurants, 1% elsewhere, rare for a secured card
- Cashback Match doubles all rewards in year one
- No annual fee and a fully refundable deposit
- Graduates to an unsecured card and refunds your deposit
- Applications temporarily paused (relaunch expected)
- Discover acceptance is narrower than Visa or Mastercard
- 2% is capped at $1,000 combined per quarter
The welcome bonus
The welcome is the Cashback Match: Discover doubles all the cash back you earn in your first year, which for most people is worth far more than a flat sign-up bonus. It rewards you just for using the card responsibly.
Is the annual fee worth it?
There is no annual fee, and your security deposit (from $200) is fully refundable, you get it back when you graduate or close the account in good standing. So the real cost of building credit here is zero, which is exactly how it should be, and the opposite of what the fee-harvester cards do.
Benefits and protections
Beyond the rewards, the perks and protections worth knowing about include:
- Cashback Match: Discover matches all the cash back you earn in your first year
- Refundable security deposit from $200 sets your credit limit
- Automatic reviews starting at 7 months to graduate to an unsecured card and refund your deposit
Statement credits
This card does not come with recurring statement credits. Its value is in the rewards rate and welcome offer.
Who should get it, and who should skip it
If you are building or rebuilding credit, this is the card to get. It earns like a real rewards card, it costs nothing to hold, and Discover starts reviewing your account at seven months to move you to an unsecured card and hand your deposit back. That graduation path is the whole point.
The only caveats: Discover is not accepted everywhere, so it should not be your only card long-term, and applications were paused in 2026 after the Capital One acquisition, with a relaunch expected. When it is open, it is the first secured card I would reach for.
