Marriott Bonvoy Premier® Credit Card Review
Overview
The Marriott Bonvoy Premier is a legacy card, the older Marriott card that the Boundless replaced, so you cannot apply for it anymore. But plenty of people still hold it, and the reason is simple: the $85 fee comes with an annual free night that is worth more than the fee, so it quietly pays for itself every year.
The earning is dated compared to the newer Marriott cards, but if you already have one, there is little reason to give it up. It is a cheap way to keep a free night and some Marriott status.
Think twice if: you are hoping to apply, since it is closed to new applicants and the Boundless is the current version.
Our 3.0 out of 5 rating
Each score weighs the rewards rate, value after the annual fee, welcome offer, points flexibility, and perks, with every point valued at a flat 1 cent. This is our editorial assessment to help you compare cards, not a guarantee of approval or of the value you will get.
Rewards: how it earns
You earn 5x at Marriott, 2x at restaurants, car rental agencies, and on airline tickets, and 1x on everything else. That is weaker than the newer Boundless, which earns 6x at Marriott and 3x on more categories, so this is not a card to run everyday spending through. Use it for the free night and Marriott stays, not for earning.
| Category | Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dining and restaurants | 2x | Bonus category |
| Travel | 2x | Bonus category |
| Groceries | 1x | Base rate |
| Gas | 1x | Base rate |
| Streaming | 1x | Base rate |
| Everything else | 1x | Everything else |
Brand and bonus rates: beyond the everyday categories above, this card also earns:
- 5x Marriott Bonvoy points at participating Marriott hotels
The fine print on rates: No longer open to new applicants — the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless replaced it, but some cardholders still hold it. Earns Marriott Bonvoy points.
Every point and mile above is valued at a flat 1 cent, the same honest standard we use for every card. Run your own spending through the calculator to see what this card would actually return for you.
Pros and cons
- Annual free night worth more than the $85 fee
- Low annual fee for a hotel card
- Silver status and 15 Elite Night Credits each year
- No foreign transaction fees
- Closed to new applicants
- Weaker earning than the newer Boundless
- Points locked to Marriott and worth less than transferable points
The welcome bonus
There is no welcome bonus, because the card is closed to new applicants. Its value now is entirely in the annual free night and status, not a sign-up.
Is the annual fee worth it?
The $85 fee is easy to justify for existing holders, because the anniversary free night, good for a stay up to 25,000 points and now toppable with more points, is worth more than $85 at most properties. As long as you use that free night each year, the card pays for itself, which is exactly why people keep it.
Benefits and protections
Beyond the rewards, the perks and protections worth knowing about include:
- Free Night Award each anniversary (up to 25,000 points; can now be topped off with up to 25,000 points)
- Automatic Silver Elite Status + 15 Elite Night Credits annually
- Path to Gold Elite Status with $35k annual spend
- Complimentary premium Wi-Fi at participating Marriott hotels
- No foreign transaction fees
- Trip delay reimbursement and baggage delay insurance
- Purchase protection and extended warranty
Statement credits
- Free Night Award each anniversary (up to 25,000 pts)
Who should get it, and who should skip it
If you already hold the Bonvoy Premier and stay at Marriott even occasionally, keep it, the annual free night beats the modest $85 fee, and you hold onto some Marriott status along the way. There is no reason to cancel a card that pays for itself.
Since you cannot apply for it anymore, there is nothing to chase here if you do not have one, look at the Boundless, which is the current version with stronger earning. This is purely a card for existing holders to keep.
