Overview
The TD Double Up is a clean flat 2% cash-back card with no annual fee, in the same spirit as the Citi Double Cash. Two percent on everything with no categories to track is always a strong, simple foundation.
There are two catches worth knowing: your rewards have to be redeemed into an eligible TD Bank deposit account, so you effectively need a TD checking or savings account, and TD is mostly an Eastern-U.S. bank. For an existing TD customer this is a great free card; for everyone else, those hurdles matter.
Think twice if: you do not bank with TD, since you need a TD deposit account to redeem and TD is only in certain states.
Our 3.5 out of 5 rating
Each score weighs the rewards rate, value after the annual fee, welcome offer, points flexibility, and perks, with every point valued at a flat 1 cent. This is our editorial assessment to help you compare cards, not a guarantee of approval or of the value you will get.
Rewards: how it earns
You earn an unlimited flat 2% on every purchase, with no categories and no caps. That is a strong, simple rate. The wrinkle is redemption: the cash back goes into an eligible TD Bank deposit account, so the card really assumes you are already a TD banking customer.
| Category | Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dining and restaurants | 2x | Base rate |
| Groceries | 2x | Base rate |
| Gas | 2x | Base rate |
| Travel | 2x | Base rate |
| Streaming | 2x | Base rate |
| Everything else | 2x | Everything else |
The fine print on rates: Unlimited flat 2% cash back, but rewards must be redeemed into an eligible TD Bank deposit account, so you effectively need a TD Bank checking or savings account. TD Bank operates mainly in the Eastern U.S.
Every point and mile above is valued at a flat 1 cent, the same honest standard we use for every card. Run your own spending through the calculator to see what this card would actually return for you.
Pros and cons
- No annual fee
- Unlimited flat 2% on everything
- Easy $200 welcome bonus
- Rewards must be redeemed into a TD Bank deposit account
- TD is mostly an Eastern-U.S. bank, so availability is limited
- Cash back only, no transfer upside
The welcome bonus
The welcome is easy: $200 cash back after $1,500 in 90 days. Solid for a free card.
Is the annual fee worth it?
There is no annual fee, so there is nothing to justify. Flat 2% for free is a great deal, provided you have the TD deposit account needed to actually collect your rewards.
Benefits and protections
Beyond the rewards, the perks and protections worth knowing about include:
- No rotating categories and no caps
- Rewards redeem into an eligible TD Bank deposit account
Statement credits
This card does not come with recurring statement credits. Its value is in the rewards rate and welcome offer.
Who should get it, and who should skip it
If you already bank with TD, the Double Up is an excellent free card, a straightforward 2% on everything, redeemed right into your TD account. It is one of the better flat-rate options for a TD customer.
If you do not bank with TD, the deposit-account requirement and the regional availability make it a harder sell, and a widely available 2% card without strings is simpler. Judge it by your TD relationship.
