Welcome bonus and value over time
| Over time | American Express® Gold | Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome bonus | 100,000 Membership Rewards® Points | $200 online cash rewards bonus |
| To earn it | $8,000 in 6 months | $1,000 in 90 days |
| Est. first-year value* | $1,697 | $691 |
| Est. ongoing value / yr* | $697 | $491 |
The American Express® Gold wins on both fronts: it comes out ahead in year one on the welcome offer and stays ahead every year after. Short term or long, it is the stronger pick on the numbers.
*First-year value counts the welcome bonus, estimated rewards, and annual credits, minus the annual fee; ongoing value is a typical year after. Every point at a flat 1 cent.
Perks, credits, and redemptions
| Perks | American Express® Gold | Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Lounge access | None | None |
| Annual credits | ~$424/yr (4 credits) | None |
| Points & redemptions | Transferable to airline & hotel partners | Cash back only |
On perks and redemptions, the American Express® Gold carries the heavier credit stack (about $424 a year); the American Express® Gold earns transferable points with a higher redemption ceiling, while the other is capped nearer a flat cent. Weigh those against the fee, since credits and lounge access only count if you will actually use them.
Transfer partners and point value
Only the American Express® Gold earns transferable points. Its Amex Membership Rewards move to Delta, ANA, Air France-KLM Flying Blue, Virgin Atlantic, plus Hilton and Marriott, where a point can be worth several cents on a premium-cabin redemption, far above its cash value. The Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards pays flat cash back, worth about a cent, so its ceiling is nearer a penny per point no matter how you redeem.
Both reward dining and groceries, but the Gold is a premium transferable-points card with credits, while the Customized Cash is a free, pick-your-category cash card.
The Gold earns a strong 4x on dining and groceries and its Membership Rewards transfer for outsized travel value, offset by a stack of monthly credits. The Customized Cash lets you put 3% on your top category for free. Premium points-and-credits vs free flexible cash.

Where each one wins
| Category | Winner | Why |
|---|---|---|

| Reward ceiling | Amex Gold | Transferable points can beat cash on premium travel. |
| Annual fee | BofA Customized Cash | $0 vs $325 (offset by credits). |
| Flexibility | BofA Customized Cash | Choose your 3% category; simple cash. |
| Best for | Depends | Heavy diners who travel vs light/flexible cash spenders. |
The verdict
If you spend a lot on dining and groceries and will use the credits, the Amex Gold is a powerhouse, 4x in both categories plus transferable points can far exceed the BofA card’s capped cash, and the monthly credits offset much of the $325 if you actually use them. For a foodie who travels, it’s excellent.
If you want free, flexible cash, the Customized Cash is a smart no-fee card, 3% on a category you pick and 2% at groceries and wholesale, boosted further if you bank with BofA. The split: heavy dining-and-grocery spenders who’ll work the Gold’s credits and transfers come out ahead; everyone who wants simple free cash is better served by the Customized Cash.
