Welcome bonus and value over time
| Over time | American Express® Platinum | Citi Strata Elite℠ |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome bonus | 175,000 Membership Rewards® Points | 75,000 ThankYou® Points |
| To earn it | $12,000 in 6 months | $6,000 in 3 months |
| Est. first-year value* | $2,448 | $1,294 |
| Est. ongoing value / yr* | $698 | $544 |
The American Express® Platinum wins on both fronts: it comes out ahead in year one on the welcome offer and stays ahead every year after. Short term or long, it is the stronger pick on the numbers.
*First-year value counts the welcome bonus, estimated rewards, and annual credits, minus the annual fee; ongoing value is a typical year after. Every point at a flat 1 cent.
Perks, credits, and redemptions
| Perks | American Express® Platinum | Citi Strata Elite℠ |
|---|---|---|
| Lounge access | Yes — Centurion, Priority Pass, Delta Sky Club | Yes — Priority Pass, Admirals Club |
| Annual credits | ~$1,229/yr (7 credits) | ~$700/yr (4 credits) |
| Points & redemptions | Transferable to airline & hotel partners | Transferable to airline & hotel partners |
On perks and redemptions, the American Express® Platinum carries the heavier credit stack (about $1,229 a year). Weigh those against the fee, since credits and lounge access only count if you will actually use them.
Transfer partners and point value
The American Express® Platinum earns Amex Membership Rewards, which transfers to Delta, ANA, Air France-KLM Flying Blue, Virgin Atlantic, plus Hilton and Marriott. The Citi Strata Elite℠ earns Citi ThankYou, reaching American Airlines, Turkish, Avianca, and Air France-KLM. Most transfers are 1:1 on both, so the partners themselves, not the ratios, are what separate them.
The standout difference is the crown-jewel partner: for the American Express® Platinum it is ANA and Virgin Atlantic, the routes behind the famous business- and first-class sweet spots to Asia; for the Citi Strata Elite℠ it is American Airlines AAdvantage at 1:1, one of the only ways to transfer points to AA. Pick the program whose best partners match the trips you would actually book.
One ratio note: on a few shared partners like Cathay Pacific and Emirates, Amex transfers at a slightly worse rate (5:4) than Citi, Capital One, and Bilt, which move 1:1, so those programs stretch a little further there.
Both are premium travel cards, but the Strata Elite launched as a deliberate value alternative to the Platinum, $300 less in fee with a lot of the same premium DNA.
The Platinum still wins on raw lounge access and hotel status. The Strata Elite counters with a lower fee, an actual everyday earn rate (1.5x vs the Platinum’s 1x), lounge access of its own, and a rare 1:1 transfer to American Airlines. It’s flagship prestige vs premium value.

- 5x on flights and prepaid hotels via Amex Travel
- ~$1,500 in annual credits
- $895 fee, $300 more than the Strata Elite

- Priority Pass plus 4 Admirals Club passes a year
- ~$820 in credits and a lower $595 fee
- Transfers to American Airlines at 1:1, plus Turkish and Avianca
- Lounge network is smaller than the Platinum’s
- No automatic hotel elite status
- Its biggest travel multipliers are locked to the Citi Travel portal
- Credits are somewhat niche (Blacklane, brand list)
Where each one wins
| Category | Winner | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lounge access | Amex Platinum | Broader network plus Sky Club; the Strata Elite adds Admirals but a smaller network. |
| Everyday earning | Citi Strata Elite | 3x dining and 1.5x base vs the Platinum’s 1x. |
| Hotel status | Amex Platinum | Automatic Hilton and Marriott Gold. |
| Transfer partners | Citi Strata Elite | American Airlines at 1:1 is unique here. |
| Annual fee | Citi Strata Elite | $595 vs $895. |
| Credits | Amex Platinum | ~$1,500 vs the Strata Elite’s ~$820, but both need active use. |
The verdict
If lounge access and status are the whole point, the Platinum still wins, nothing matches its Centurion-plus-Priority-Pass-plus-Sky-Club network, and the automatic hotel status is a real perk for frequent travelers who’ll use it. For the flyer who lives in airports and hotels, it remains the flagship.
For most premium-curious travelers, though, the Strata Elite is the smarter buy, and it’s not close on value. It costs $300 less, actually earns on your everyday spending, still gets you into lounges, and offers a 1:1 American Airlines transfer the Platinum can’t. Unless you specifically need the Platinum’s wider lounge network and status, the Strata Elite delivers most of the premium experience for meaningfully less.
