Welcome bonus and value over time
| Over time | Chase Freedom Flex℠ | United℠ Explorer |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome bonus | $200 cash bonus | Up to 60,000 bonus miles |
| To earn it | $500 in 3 months | $3,000 in 3 months |
| Est. first-year value* | $561 | $772 |
| Est. ongoing value / yr* | $361 | $172 |
This one splits by time horizon. In year one the United℠ Explorer is ahead by roughly $211, thanks largely to its welcome offer. But the Chase Freedom Flex℠ earns more every year after, so if you keep it, it overtakes the United℠ Explorer after about 2 years. Chasing the sign-up bonus and open to canceling before the second annual fee? Take the United℠ Explorer. Planning to keep it for years? The Chase Freedom Flex℠ pulls ahead.
*First-year value counts the welcome bonus, estimated rewards, and annual credits, minus the annual fee; ongoing value is a typical year after. Every point at a flat 1 cent.
Perks, credits, and redemptions
| Perks | Chase Freedom Flex℠ | United℠ Explorer |
|---|---|---|
| Lounge access | None | Yes — United Club |
| Annual credits | None | None |
| Points & redemptions | Transferable (paired with a premium card) | Locked to a single program |
On perks and redemptions, only the United℠ Explorer gets you into airport lounges; the Chase Freedom Flex℠ earns transferable points with a higher redemption ceiling, while the other is capped nearer a flat cent. Weigh those against the fee, since credits and lounge access only count if you will actually use them.
Transfer partners and point value
Only the Chase Freedom Flex℠ earns transferable points. Its Chase Ultimate Rewards move to World of Hyatt, United, Air Canada, Southwest, and British Airways Avios, where a point can be worth several cents on a premium-cabin redemption, far above its cash value. The United℠ Explorer stays locked to a single airline or hotel program, so its ceiling is nearer a penny per point no matter how you redeem.
One is a free everyday card whose points can become United miles, the other a United co-brand with airline perks, so they can actually complement each other.
The Flex earns a rotating 5% and 3% dining for free, and with a Chase Sapphire its points transfer to United among others. The Explorer adds the things a co-brand does best, free bags, boarding, lounge passes, that earning alone can’t provide. Free flexible earning vs United travel perks.

- No annual fee
- Cell-phone protection
- No airline perks like free bags or boarding

- Points cash-only without a Sapphire
- Free first checked bag on United for you and a companion
- Two United Club passes a year and priority boarding
- 2x on dining, travel, and United; Global Entry credit
- Large mileage welcome bonus
- $150 fee, only worth it for United flyers
- Miles locked to United
- Only 1x on non-category spend
- No value if you don’t fly United
Where each one wins
| Category | Winner | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday earning | Freedom Flex | 5% rotating + 3% dining, transferable, vs the Explorer’s 2x. |
| Airline perks | United Explorer | Free bags, boarding, and lounge passes the Flex lacks. |
| Annual fee | Freedom Flex | $0 vs $150. |
| United miles | Split | The Explorer earns them directly; the Flex transfers to them via a Sapphire. |
| Best role | Together | Flex earns flexibly; the Explorer adds United perks. |
The verdict
If you want free, flexible earning, the Freedom Flex is the better everyday card, its rotating 5% and 3% dining beat the Explorer’s earn rate, and its points can even become United miles with a Sapphire. For most people it’s the more valuable card to carry.
If you fly United, the Explorer adds perks the Flex can’t, free checked bags alone can outweigh the $150 fee for a traveling pair, plus boarding and club passes. The smart move for a United flyer is often both: the Explorer for the airline perks and the Flex (with a Sapphire) to pile up transferable points that top off your United account.
