Welcome bonus and value over time
| Over time | Chase Freedom Flex℠ | Discover it® Cash Back |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome bonus | $200 cash bonus | Cashback Match, all cash back earned in year 1 doubled |
| To earn it | $500 in 3 months | No minimum |
| Est. first-year value* | $561 | $292 |
| Est. ongoing value / yr* | $361 | $292 |
The Chase Freedom Flex℠ wins on both fronts: it comes out ahead in year one on the welcome offer and stays ahead every year after. Short term or long, it is the stronger pick on the numbers.
*First-year value counts the welcome bonus, estimated rewards, and annual credits, minus the annual fee; ongoing value is a typical year after. Every point at a flat 1 cent.
Perks, credits, and redemptions
| Perks | Chase Freedom Flex℠ | Discover it® Cash Back |
|---|---|---|
| Lounge access | None | None |
| Annual credits | None | None |
| Points & redemptions | Transferable (paired with a premium card) | Cash back only |
On perks and redemptions, the Chase Freedom Flex℠ earns transferable points with a higher redemption ceiling, while the other is capped nearer a flat cent. Weigh those against the fee, since credits and lounge access only count if you will actually use them.
Transfer partners and point value
Only the Chase Freedom Flex℠ earns transferable points. Its Chase Ultimate Rewards move to World of Hyatt, United, Air Canada, Southwest, and British Airways Avios, where a point can be worth several cents on a premium-cabin redemption, far above its cash value. The Discover it® Cash Back pays flat cash back, worth about a cent, so its ceiling is nearer a penny per point no matter how you redeem.
Both earn 5% on rotating quarterly categories you activate, so the differences are what they earn outside those categories and what happens in year one.
The Freedom Flex adds a standing 3x on dining and drugstores and plugs into Chase’s transfer partners. The Discover it Cash has no standing bonus categories, but its Cashback Match doubles everything you earn the first year, effectively 10% in rotating categories and 2% on everything for twelve months. First-year jackpot vs stronger ongoing card.

The verdict
For year one specifically, the Discover it Cash is almost unbeatable, its Cashback Match doubles every dollar you earn, turning 5% rotating into 10% and 1% base into 2% for twelve months, all as simple cash with no fee. If you want the most rewards in a single year with zero complexity, it’s the standout.
For the long haul, the Freedom Flex is the stronger card. After the Discover’s first-year match ends, the Flex keeps earning 3x on dining and drugstores year-round, and its points can transfer to World of Hyatt and United for outsized value if you add a Sapphire. Many people do both: open the Discover for the doubled first year, and hold the Freedom Flex as the permanent higher-earning card. But if you must pick one, Discover for the first-year jackpot, Flex for lasting value.
