Transfer partners and point value
Only the Chase Freedom Unlimited® earns transferable points. The Hilton Honors Surpass® stays locked to a single airline or hotel program, so its ceiling is nearer a penny per point no matter how you redeem.

The verdict
If you want one free card that earns well everywhere, the Freedom Unlimited is the more broadly useful pick, and its points can become premium travel currency with a Sapphire. For most people it’s the everyday workhorse.
If you stay at Hilton, the Surpass can more than justify its fee, the annual free night alone often exceeds $150, and Gold status (free breakfast and upgrades) plus the huge welcome bonus add real value. They serve different needs: everyday earning vs Hilton loyalty. A Hilton guest could hold the Surpass for hotels and the Freedom Unlimited for everything else.
