Transfer partners and point value
Neither card earns transferable points, so redemptions are cash-back or fixed portal value on both, roughly a cent per point. There is no airline or hotel transfer angle to separate them.

The verdict
If you stay at Hilton even a couple of nights a year, the Surpass is worth the step up, its annual free night reward alone frequently outvalues the $150 fee, Gold status gets you breakfast and fifth-night-free perks, and it earns more on both Hilton stays and everyday categories. For any Hilton guest, it’s the better card.
The free Honors card is the pick if you want Hilton earning without a fee, and it’s genuinely excellent at it, 5x on U.S. dining, groceries, and gas is one of the best no-fee everyday rates around, and Silver status still helps a little. If you rarely stay at Hilton and just want to rack up points cheaply, the free card is the smarter hold. But for anyone who books Hilton nights, the Surpass’s free night tips it.
