Cash and Points Hotel Redemptions, Explained
How it works
Many hotel programs offer a cash-and-points option on award stays: instead of paying the full points price, you pay a reduced number of points plus a set cash amount per night. It is a way to stretch a points balance, book when you are short on points, or save points for a bigger redemption.
When it is good value
The test is what the cash portion effectively buys back your points for. Compare the points saved against the cash added: if the cash buys back points at less than they are worth to you, cash-and-points is a good deal; if it buys them back at more, pay full points or full cash instead. Run it per booking, because programs price it inconsistently.
How to decide
Line up three prices: full points, full cash, and cash-and-points, and value your points at a consistent rate (the flat 1 cent floor is a fair baseline). Pick whichever costs you the least in real value. Cash-and-points shines when you are slightly short on points or want to preserve them. See how to book a hotel with points and what points are worth.
