How to Dispute a Credit Report Error
Find and document the error
First, get your reports (free at AnnualCreditReport.com) and identify the specific error: an account that is not yours, a wrong balance or limit, an on-time payment marked late, or an old debt that should have fallen off. Gather any proof you have, such as statements or payment confirmations. See how to read your credit report.
File the dispute
Dispute with the credit bureau that shows the error (each bureau has an online dispute portal, or you can mail a letter). Explain what is wrong and attach documentation. It also helps to dispute with the furnisher (the lender that reported it). Keep copies and records of everything you send.
What happens next
The bureau generally must investigate within about 30 days and either correct the item or remove it if it cannot be verified. You will get the results in writing. If a genuine error is fixed, it can lift your credit score fairly quickly, since errors that wrongly drag down a score are removed. If a dispute is denied but you disagree, you can add a statement or escalate.
