Overview
The Chase Freedom Unlimited is one of the best no-annual-fee cards going, especially if you are in the Chase ecosystem. It earns 1.5% on everything plus elevated rates on dining and drugstores, and it costs nothing to hold.
The real magic is that its points become transferable Ultimate Rewards when you pair it with a Sapphire card. So a free card quietly turns into a travel-points machine, which is exactly why I love it.
Think twice if: you will never hold a Sapphire or Ink card, since the points are only cash-value on their own.
Our 4.5 out of 5 rating
Each score weighs the rewards rate, value after the annual fee, welcome offer, points flexibility, and perks, with every point valued at a flat 1 cent. This is our editorial assessment to help you compare cards, not a guarantee of approval or of the value you will get.
Rewards: how it earns
You earn 1.5% on everything, 3% on dining and drugstores, and 5% on travel booked through Chase, all with no annual fee. On its own that is a strong cash-back card, but paired with a Sapphire, those points become transferable Ultimate Rewards, which is where the real value lives. It is the perfect everyday partner to a Chase travel card.

Pros and cons
- No annual fee
- 1.5% on everything, 3% dining and drugstores, 5% Chase travel
- Points become transferable when paired with a Sapphire
- Easy $200 welcome bonus
- Points are cash-value on their own, without a Sapphire
- 1.5% base is below a flat 2% card
- Best value requires being in the Chase ecosystem
The welcome bonus
The welcome bonus is easy: $200 after $500 in three months, sometimes with bonus rates on top. For a free card, that is close to free money.
Is it worth the annual fee?
There is no annual fee, which is the whole point. You get strong everyday earning and, when paired with a Sapphire, transferable points, all for free. There is nothing to justify and every reason to keep it forever.
First-year value vs ongoing value
| Welcome bonus | $200 cash bonus |
| To earn it | $500 in 3 months |
| Est. first-year value* | $690 |
| Est. ongoing value / yr* | $490 |
The welcome bonus makes year one the high point: roughly $690 in value once you count the bonus, this card’s rewards, and its credits, minus the no fee. After that, the honest figure is about $490 a year, so judge whether it earns its keep on the ongoing number, not the first-year headline.
*First-year value counts the welcome bonus, estimated rewards, and annual credits, minus the annual fee; ongoing value is a typical year after. Every point at a flat 1 cent, on average spending.
Benefits and protections
Beyond the rewards, the perks and protections worth knowing about include:
- Pool points with Chase Sapphire for 1:1 airline and hotel transfers
- Trip cancellation/interruption insurance
- Purchase protection and extended warranty
- Secondary rental car coverage
Statement credits
This card does not come with recurring statement credits. Its value is in the rewards rate and welcome offer.
Ecosystem and transfer partners
The Chase Freedom Unlimited® earns Ultimate Rewards, one of the more valuable currencies in rewards because of where the points can go. On its own it earns flexible points, but paired with a premium Chase card you can pool them together and unlock 1 to 1 transfers to 8 airline and hotel partners: United Airlines, World of Hyatt, Southwest Airlines, British Airways, Air France/KLM, Singapore Airlines, Air Canada, and Virgin Atlantic. As an earner, its job is to rack up points cheaply that you move to a hub card before transferring. The sweet spots are usually premium-cabin flights and high-end hotel nights, where a single point can be worth well more than the 1 cent we value it at here.

If you are building a Chase setup, this is a must-hold companion card. Use it for everyday spending, pair it with a Sapphire, and your 1.5% turns into flexible travel points. As a free card, it punches way above its weight.
Even on its own it is a fine cash-back card. But its best use is as part of the Chase trifecta, feeding transferable points to a Sapphire. That combination is one of the best free-plus-cheap setups in the game.
