Overview

The J.P. Morgan Reserve is one of those cards most people will never see, because you cannot apply for it, you have to be invited, and the invitation generally goes to J.P. Morgan Private Bank clients with something like $10 million or more managed with the firm. It is the ultra-wealthy version of the Chase Sapphire Reserve, right down to the palladium-and-gold metal.

Here is the honest truth, though: underneath the exclusivity, it is essentially the same card as the Sapphire Reserve. Same transferable Ultimate Rewards, same core earning, same $300 travel credit and Priority Pass. It is a genuinely strong travel card, but the difference is mostly the metal and the status of carrying it.

Best for: J.P. Morgan Private Bank clients who want a metal status card that earns transferable Chase points.
Think twice if: you are not a Private Bank client, since you cannot get it, and the Sapphire Reserve gives you nearly the identical card.

Rewards: how it earns

You earn 10x on hotels and car rentals booked through Chase Travel, 5x on Chase flights, 3x on all other travel and dining, and 1x on everything else, in transferable Ultimate Rewards. That is the same strong, flexible earning as the Sapphire Reserve, and the points transfer to the same airline and hotel partners for well over a cent each. The rewards are excellent, they are just not exclusive to this card.

Brand and bonus rates: beyond the everyday categories above, this card also earns:

  • 10x Ultimate Rewards points on hotels and car rentals booked through Chase Travel
  • 5x on flights booked through Chase Travel

The fine print on rates: Invitation only — you cannot apply. Generally offered to J.P. Morgan Private Bank clients with roughly $10 million or more in assets managed by the firm. Earns the same transferable Chase Ultimate Rewards as the Sapphire Reserve.

Pros and cons

Pros
  • Same strong, transferable Ultimate Rewards as the Sapphire Reserve
  • $300 travel credit and Priority Pass lounge access
  • Premium palladium-and-gold metal card
  • A genuine status symbol for those who qualify
Cons
  • Invitation only, generally requires a ~$10 million J.P. Morgan Private Bank relationship
  • Benefits essentially mirror the attainable Sapphire Reserve
  • $795 annual fee

The welcome bonus

There is no welcome bonus, because the card is invitation only and not something you apply for. Its value is in the ongoing earning, the credits, and, frankly, the prestige, not a sign-up bonus.

Is the annual fee worth it?

The $795 fee is the same as the Sapphire Reserve, and it is justified the same way, through the $300 travel credit, lounge access, and strong earning, if you travel enough to use them. What you are really paying extra for here is the metal card and the exclusivity, because the underlying benefits mirror the card anyone can apply for.

Benefits and protections

Beyond the rewards, the perks and protections worth knowing about include:

  • Potential invite requirements: a J.P. Morgan Private Bank relationship, generally around $10 million or more in investable assets managed with the firm (ultimately at the bank's discretion)
  • $300 annual travel credit (auto-applied to travel purchases)
  • Metal palladium-and-gold card
  • Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS application fee credit
  • 1:1 point transfer to Chase airline and hotel partners
  • No foreign transaction fees

Lounge access

This card includes airport lounge access. Here is exactly what you get, including the Priority Pass distinctions that vary by card:

  • Priority Pass Select: unlimited visits to 1,300+ airport lounges worldwide (lounge access only)
  • Access to Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club locations
  • Up to 2 guests free, then a per-guest fee

Statement credits

  • $300 annual travel credit (auto-applied)
  • Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS application fee credit

Ecosystem and transfer partners

The J.P. Morgan Reserve Card earns Ultimate Rewards, one of the more valuable currencies in rewards because of where the points can go. You can move points 1 to 1 to 8 airline and hotel partners: United Airlines, World of Hyatt, Southwest Airlines, British Airways, Air France/KLM, Singapore Airlines, Air Canada, and Virgin Atlantic. As a hub card, this is the one you route points through before transferring out. The sweet spots are usually premium-cabin flights and high-end hotel nights, where a single point can be worth well more than the 1 cent we value it at here.

Airline partners: United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, British Airways, Air France/KLM, Singapore Airlines, Air Canada, Virgin Atlantic.

Who should get it, and who should skip it

If you are a J.P. Morgan Private Bank client and you are offered this card, sure, take it, it is a top-tier travel card and the metal is a nice flex. Just understand that its actual benefits are essentially the Sapphire Reserve, which you could carry without the $10 million relationship.

For everyone else, this is not something you can chase, and there is no need to. The Sapphire Reserve gives you the same Ultimate Rewards, the same credits, and the same lounge access. This card is about who you bank with, not about a better set of benefits.
