Overview

The Discover it Cash Back is a no-annual-fee card with a genuinely clever first-year hook: Discover matches all the cash back you earn at the end of year one. Combine that with 5% rotating categories, and the effective first-year return can be enormous.

The catch is that Discover is not accepted everywhere the way Visa and Mastercard are, and the rotating categories take activation. But as a free card, especially in year one, the value is real.

Best for: someone who wants a free card with a huge first-year return from the cash-back match and will activate rotating 5% categories.
Think twice if: you travel abroad or shop where Discover is not accepted, since acceptance is narrower than Visa or Mastercard.

Rewards: how it earns

You earn 5% on rotating quarterly categories on up to $1,500 in spend, and 1% on everything else, and then Discover doubles all of it at the end of your first year. That cashback match effectively turns the 5% into 10% and the 1% into 2% for year one, which is a huge return for a free card. After the first year it settles into a solid rotating-category card.

Pros and cons

Pros
  • No annual fee
  • First-year cashback match can beat any welcome bonus
  • 5% rotating categories
  • Good option for people newer to credit
Cons
  • Discover acceptance is narrower than Visa or Mastercard
  • Rotating 5% must be activated and is capped
  • Cash back only, no transfer upside

The welcome bonus

Instead of a lump-sum bonus, Discover matches all the cash back you earn in your first year, which for most people is worth far more than a typical welcome bonus. It rewards you for actually using the card.

Is it worth the annual fee?

There is no annual fee, so there is nothing to justify. The value is all upside, especially in that first year with the cashback match.

First-year value vs ongoing value

Welcome bonusCashback Match, all cash back earned in year 1 doubled
To earn itNo minimum
Est. first-year value*$292
Est. ongoing value / yr*$292

There is no lump-sum welcome bonus, so first-year and ongoing value are about the same, roughly $292 a year on typical spending after the fee. What you see is what you get from day one.

*First-year value counts the welcome bonus, estimated rewards, and annual credits, minus the annual fee; ongoing value is a typical year after. Every point at a flat 1 cent, on average spending.

Benefits and protections

Beyond the rewards, the perks and protections worth knowing about include:

  • Unlimited Cashback Match, Discover doubles all cash back earned in your first year
  • Free FICO® credit score on every statement
  • Freeze your account instantly via the app
  • $0 fraud liability guarantee
  • No late fee on your first late payment
  • Dark web monitoring and Social Security number alerts

Statement credits

This card does not come with recurring statement credits. Its value is in the rewards rate and welcome offer.

Who should get it, and who should skip it

If you want a free card with an outstanding first-year return and you are willing to activate the rotating categories, the Discover it is a great pick, the cashback match can beat almost any welcome bonus. It is also a friendly card for people newer to credit.

The one caveat is acceptance: Discover is not taken everywhere, especially abroad, so it should not be your only card. Pair it with a widely accepted card and enjoy the first-year match.
