Our review

The Bread Cashback American Express is a flat 2% cash back card with no annual fee and, unusually for a 2% card, no foreign transaction fees. Cash back redeems as a statement credit or direct deposit.

That last point makes it a good travel companion where many 2% cards charge 3% abroad. The tradeoffs are no current welcome bonus and American Express acceptance, which is narrower at some merchants and overseas.

Best for: people who want a simple 2% on everything and no foreign transaction fees, at no annual fee.
Think twice if: you shop where American Express is not widely accepted, or you want a welcome bonus.

The fine print on rates: A true flat 2% card with no foreign transaction fees, which makes it useful abroad where some 2% cards charge 3%. American Express acceptance is narrower than Visa or Mastercard at some merchants.

Every point and mile above is valued at a flat 1 cent, the same honest standard we use for every card. Run your own spending through the calculator to see what this card would actually return for you.

Best ways to earn & redeem

Use it as a flat-rate everyday card, since it earns the same on every purchase, and pair it with bonus-category cards for groceries, dining, and travel.

When you cash in, take the rewards as cash back or a statement credit, worth a flat 1 cent each. We value every point at a flat 1 cent, so treat any transfer upside as a bonus rather than the baseline — see what your points are really worth.
