Our review

The IHG One Rewards Traveler is the free version of IHG's card lineup: no annual fee, a solid welcome bonus, and decent bonus earning, but without the annual free night that makes the Premier so valuable. For occasional IHG guests, it is a no-cost way to earn toward stays.

As a free card there is nothing to lose by holding it, but the lack of a free night means it gives up the IHG cards' best perk.

Best for: occasional IHG guests who want a free card to earn toward stays without paying a fee.
Think twice if: you stay at IHG often, since the Premier's annual free night would be worth far more than its fee.

Rewards: how it earns

Where the IHG One Rewards Credit Card earns its rewards is its bonus categories: 3x on gas (about $65 a year on the $2,160 a typical household spends there), 3x on dining (about $90 a year on the $3,000 a typical household spends there), and 3x on groceries (about $180 a year on the $6,000 a typical household spends there). Across a full year of average household spending, the card returns roughly $695 in rewards before any welcome bonus, so the more your spending overlaps those categories, the better it does.

Pros and cons

Pros
  • 3x on gas
  • 3x on dining
  • 3x on groceries
  • No annual fee
  • Welcome offer worth about $1,250
  • No foreign transaction fees
Cons
  • No annual free night, unlike the Premier
  • Points locked to IHG and lower-value
  • Limited value if you do not stay at IHG

The welcome bonus

The current welcome offer is 125,000 IHG One Rewards Points, earned after you spend $2,000 in 3 months. Valued honestly at a flat 1 cent per point, that is worth about $1,250. The spending requirement works out to roughly $666 per month, so make sure it fits your normal budget rather than pushing you to overspend. Enough for several nights, and the main reason to pick it up.

First-year value vs ongoing value

Welcome bonus125,000 IHG One Rewards Points
To earn it$2,000 in 3 months
Est. first-year value*$1,945
Est. ongoing value / yr*$695

The welcome bonus makes year one the high point: roughly $1,945 in value once you count the bonus, this card’s rewards, and its credits, minus the no fee. After that, the honest figure is about $695 a year, so judge whether it earns its keep on the ongoing number, not the first-year headline.

*First-year value counts the welcome bonus, estimated rewards, and annual credits, minus the annual fee; ongoing value is a typical year after. Every point at a flat 1 cent, on average spending.

Benefits and protections

Beyond the rewards, the perks and protections worth knowing about include:

  • Up to 17x points at IHG Hotels & Resorts
  • Fourth reward night free on award stays of 4+ nights
  • No foreign transaction fees

Statement credits

This card does not come with recurring statement credits. Its value is in the rewards rate and welcome offer.

Who should get it, and who should skip it

If you stay at IHG now and then and want a free card to earn points, the Traveler is a fine, no-cost choice, the welcome bonus alone makes year one worthwhile.

If you stay at IHG regularly, step up to the Premier, its free night will more than cover the fee. The free Traveler is best for lighter, occasional guests.
