How to Transfer HSBC Points to Airline Miles

The short answer: Join the airline or hotel program first and make sure the name matches your HSBC card exactly. Then log in to HSBC Personal Internet Banking at us.hsbc.com, open your card’s rewards, and choose Rewards for Miles to pick a partner and enter the amount, or call the HSBC Premier Rewards Department at 1.888.662.4722. There is no minimum, but points take 5 to 14 days to arrive and the transfer cannot be undone, so find your award seat before you start.

Before you start

Only two cards can transfer: the HSBC Premier World Mastercard and the HSBC Elite World Elite Mastercard. The account has to be open and in good standing, and only the primary cardholder can start a transfer, so an authorized user on your card cannot move points even into their own airline account.

You also need a loyalty account with the partner, and HSBC is strict about names. The first and last name on the airline or hotel account must match the name on your HSBC card, and HSBC may decline or reverse a transfer if they do not. If you are not sure which partner to use, start with our breakdown of HSBC’s partners and ratios.

Step by step

  1. Find the award first. Search for the flight or hotel night you want and confirm the partner actually has it at a price you like. Because HSBC transfers take days rather than minutes, this matters even more than usual.
  2. Join the partner program. If you do not already have an account with the airline or hotel, open one and note the membership number. The first and last name on it must match the name on your HSBC card exactly.
  3. Log in to HSBC. Sign in to Personal Internet Banking at us.hsbc.com, open your Premier World or Elite card’s rewards, and choose Rewards for Miles. If you would rather do it by phone, the HSBC Premier Rewards Department is at 1.888.662.4722 (1.716.841.6866 from outside the US).
  4. Pick the partner and the amount. Select the program, enter your membership number, and enter how many points to move. There is no minimum or maximum, so transfer only what the award costs.
  5. Confirm. The points leave your HSBC balance immediately, and the transfer cannot be cancelled once it goes through.
  6. Wait, then book. HSBC says points usually post within 5 days but can take up to 14 for some programs. Watch your partner account, and book the award as soon as the miles arrive.

How many miles you will get

The ratio depends on the partner, and HSBC rounds the result to the nearest whole number. At 1:1, which covers British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Emirates, Qantas, and TAP, 10,000 HSBC points become 10,000 miles or Avios. At 5:4, which covers Flying Blue, LifeMiles, Turkish, Qatar, EVA Air, and Wyndham, the same 10,000 points become 8,000. Accor is 2:1, so 10,000 points become 5,000 Accor points.

HSBC occasionally runs its own transfer bonuses. In October 2026 it is adding 20% to transfers into Flying Blue, which turns 10,000 HSBC points into 9,600 Flying Blue miles instead of 8,000. Since HSBC transfers are slow, start early in a bonus window rather than on the last day. HSBC does not publish its standard ratios on a public page, so check the rate shown in your account before you confirm. Our transfer bonus guide covers when a bonus is worth chasing.

Mistakes to avoid

The most expensive mistake is transferring before you have found the award. HSBC points cannot come back once they move, and they cannot be moved on to a different partner either, so a transfer to the wrong program leaves you holding miles you may never use. Read more about that in the speculative transfer trap.

The second is assuming the transfer will be instant. With a 5 to 14 day wait, pick awards that have several open seats or dates rather than the last seat on one flight. The third is a name mismatch, such as a missing middle name in the wrong field or a nickname on the airline account, which can get the transfer declined or delayed. Fix the loyalty account before you start.

If something goes wrong

If the partner cannot match your transfer to an account, HSBC’s rules say it will try to resolve the problem with you, and if it cannot, the points are added back to your HSBC balance. That can take a while, so keep the confirmation details from the transfer.

For anything else, call the HSBC Premier Rewards Department at 1.888.662.4722, or 1.716.841.6866 from outside the US. Once the miles land in your airline or hotel account, any problem with the booking itself is between you and that program, not HSBC.

Frequently asked questions

How do I transfer HSBC points to miles?
Log in to HSBC Personal Internet Banking at us.hsbc.com, open your Premier World or Elite card’s rewards, choose Rewards for Miles, pick the partner, enter your membership number, and enter the number of points. You can also call 1.888.662.4722.
How long does an HSBC transfer take?
HSBC says points usually post within 5 days, but some partners take up to 14 days. Find and confirm your award before transferring, because the seat could disappear while you wait.
Is there a minimum HSBC transfer?
No. HSBC currently has no minimum or maximum for Rewards for Miles transfers, so you can move exactly the number of points an award costs.
Can I transfer HSBC points to someone else?
No. Only the primary cardholder can transfer, and only to a loyalty account in their own name. HSBC may decline or reverse a transfer if the names do not match.
Can I undo an HSBC points transfer?
Generally no. Once points are transferred they cannot be returned to HSBC or moved to another partner. The exception is a transfer the partner cannot match to an account, which HSBC returns to your balance if it cannot resolve the problem.
