Citi Custom Cash℠ Review

Overview

The Citi Custom Cash is a clever no-fee card that automatically gives you 5% back on your top eligible spending category each billing cycle, up to $500 in spend, so it adapts to wherever you spend most without you having to choose. The catch is that it is now closed to new applicants, so this is really a review for people who already hold it.

If you have it, it is a strong free card to keep, especially paired with other Citi cards for transferable points. If you do not, you cannot get it anymore.

Best for: existing cardholders who want automatic 5% on their top category each month with no fee.
Think twice if: you are hoping to apply, because it is no longer open to new applicants.

Rewards: how it earns

You earn 5% back on your highest eligible spending category each billing cycle on up to $500 in purchases, then 1% after that and on everything else. Because it auto-selects your top category, it is effortless, and as ThankYou points, they can transfer to travel partners if you hold a premium Citi card. That $500 monthly cap keeps it as a supporting card, not a primary.

The fine print on rates: 5% applies to only your single top eligible category each billing cycle (up to $500 in spend); all other purchases earn 1%.

Every point and mile above is valued at a flat 1 cent, the same honest standard we use for every card. Run your own spending through the calculator to see what this card would actually return for you.

Pros and cons

Pros
  • No annual fee
  • Automatic 5% on your top category each cycle
  • Points can become transferable with a premium Citi card
  • Effortless, no category to choose
Cons
  • Closed to new applicants
  • 5% is capped at $500 of spend per cycle
  • Points are cash-value on their own

The welcome bonus

There is no welcome bonus available now that the card is closed to new applicants, so the value is purely in holding and using it.

Is it worth the annual fee?

There is no annual fee, so there is nothing to justify, and every reason to keep it if you already have one. Free automatic 5% on your top category, with points that can become transferable, is a great deal to hold onto.

First-year value vs ongoing value

Welcome bonusNot available (no longer open to new applicants)
To earn itNo minimum spend
Est. first-year value*$791
Est. ongoing value / yr*$791

There is no lump-sum welcome bonus, so first-year and ongoing value are about the same, roughly $791 a year on typical spending after the fee. What you see is what you get from day one.

*First-year value counts the welcome bonus, estimated rewards, and annual credits, minus the annual fee; ongoing value is a typical year after. Every point at a flat 1 cent, on average spending.

Benefits and protections

Beyond the rewards, the perks and protections worth knowing about include:

  • Eligible categories include restaurants, gas, groceries, select travel, transit, and streaming
  • Earns Citi ThankYou Points, poolable with a Strata Premier for airline and hotel transfers

Statement credits

This card does not come with recurring statement credits. Its value is in the rewards rate and welcome offer.

Ecosystem and transfer partners

The Citi Custom Cash℠ earns ThankYou Points, one of the more valuable currencies in rewards because of where the points can go. On its own it earns flexible points, but paired with a premium Citi card you can pool them together and unlock 1 to 1 transfers to 9 airline and hotel partners: American Airlines AAdvantage, Turkish Miles & Smiles, JetBlue TrueBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Avianca LifeMiles, Air France/KLM, Wyndham Rewards, Choice Privileges, and The Leading Hotels of the World. As an earner, its job is to rack up points cheaply that you move to a hub card before transferring. The sweet spots are usually premium-cabin flights and high-end hotel nights, where a single point can be worth well more than the 1 cent we value it at here.

Airline partners: American Airlines AAdvantage, Turkish Miles & Smiles, JetBlue TrueBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Avianca LifeMiles, Air France/KLM, The Leading Hotels of the World.

Who should get it, and who should skip it

If you already have the Custom Cash, keep it, the automatic 5% on your top category is genuinely useful and free, and it pairs beautifully with a Strata Premier for transfers.

Since it is closed to new applicants, there is nothing to chase here if you do not have it. Look at the Strata or a rotating-category card instead for similar flexible earning.
