Overview

The Citi Strata is a genuinely strong no-annual-fee card that flies under the radar. It earns 3x on groceries, gas, streaming, and transit, and 2x on dining, which covers a lot of everyday spending, and it costs nothing to hold.

The bonus is that these are ThankYou points, so if you pair it with a Strata Premier they become transferable to travel partners. A free card that can feed a travel currency is exactly the kind of thing I like.

Best for: someone who wants broad no-fee category earning that can turn into transferable points when paired with a premium Citi card.
Think twice if: you only want a single simple flat-rate card, since a 2% card is easier if you will not track categories.

Rewards: how it earns

You get 3x on groceries, gas, streaming, and transit, and 2x on dining, with no annual fee. That is a wide spread of useful 3x categories for a free card. On its own the points are cash-value, but paired with a Strata Premier or Elite they transfer to airline and hotel partners, which lifts the ceiling.

Brand and bonus rates: beyond the everyday categories above, this card also earns:

  • 5x ThankYou® Points on hotels, car rentals, and attractions booked via Citi Travel

Every point and mile above is valued at a flat 1 cent, the same honest standard we use for every card. Run your own spending through the calculator to see what this card would actually return for you.

Pros and cons

Pros
  • No annual fee
  • 3x on groceries, gas, streaming, and transit
  • Points become transferable when paired with a premium Citi card
  • Easy 20,000-point welcome bonus
Cons
  • Points are cash-value without a premium Citi card
  • Only 2x on dining
  • Best value requires being in the Citi ecosystem

The welcome bonus

The welcome bonus is easy: 20,000 points, about $200, after $1,000 in three months. Solid for a free card.

Is it worth the annual fee?

There is no annual fee, so there is nothing to justify. Broad category earning plus a path to transferable points, all for free, makes this an easy card to keep.

First-year value vs ongoing value

Welcome bonus20,000 ThankYou® Points ($200 value)
To earn it$1,000 in 3 months
Est. first-year value*$711
Est. ongoing value / yr*$511

The welcome bonus makes year one the high point: roughly $711 in value once you count the bonus, this card’s rewards, and its credits, minus the no fee. After that, the honest figure is about $511 a year, so judge whether it earns its keep on the ongoing number, not the first-year headline.

*First-year value counts the welcome bonus, estimated rewards, and annual credits, minus the annual fee; ongoing value is a typical year after. Every point at a flat 1 cent, on average spending.

Benefits and protections

Beyond the rewards, the perks and protections worth knowing about include:

  • Pair with Citi Strata Premier to unlock transfers to 18+ airline and hotel partners
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Citi Entertainment® access for presale tickets and VIP events
  • Purchase protection and extended warranty
  • World Elite Mastercard benefits

Statement credits

This card does not come with recurring statement credits. Its value is in the rewards rate and welcome offer.

Ecosystem and transfer partners

The Citi Strata℠ earns ThankYou Points, one of the more valuable currencies in rewards because of where the points can go. On its own it earns flexible points, but paired with a premium Citi card you can pool them together and unlock 1 to 1 transfers to 9 airline and hotel partners: American Airlines AAdvantage, Turkish Miles & Smiles, JetBlue TrueBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Avianca LifeMiles, Air France/KLM, Wyndham Rewards, Choice Privileges, and The Leading Hotels of the World. As an earner, its job is to rack up points cheaply that you move to a hub card before transferring. The sweet spots are usually premium-cabin flights and high-end hotel nights, where a single point can be worth well more than the 1 cent we value it at here.

Airline partners: American Airlines AAdvantage, Turkish Miles & Smiles, JetBlue TrueBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Avianca LifeMiles, Air France/KLM, The Leading Hotels of the World.

Who should get it, and who should skip it

If you are building a Citi setup, the Strata is a great no-fee companion, use it for groceries, gas, streaming, and transit, then pair it with a Strata Premier to make the points transferable. It punches above its weight for a free card.

If you never plan to touch transfers, a flat 2% card is simpler, but even as pure cash back the category coverage here is strong.
