Citi Strata Premier℠ Review
Overview
The Citi Strata Premier is one of the most underrated travel cards out there. For a $95 fee it earns 3x on a wide set of everyday and travel categories and gives you transferable ThankYou points, which makes it a genuinely strong, flexible travel card that flies under the radar.
If you want a Sapphire Preferred alternative, this is it, and in some ways it earns on more categories.
Think twice if: you only want simple cash back, since a flat 2% card is easier if you will not use transfers.
Our 4.5 out of 5 rating
Each score weighs the rewards rate, value after the annual fee, welcome offer, points flexibility, and perks, with every point valued at a flat 1 cent. This is our editorial assessment to help you compare cards, not a guarantee of approval or of the value you will get.
Rewards: how it earns
You earn 3x on dining, groceries, gas, and travel, a wider spread of 3x categories than most cards at this price, plus transferable ThankYou points. That combination of broad earning and flexibility is what makes it so strong, and the points move to airline and hotel partners for well over a penny each.
| Category | Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dining and restaurants | 3x | Bonus category |
| Groceries | 3x | Bonus category |
| Gas | 3x | Bonus category |
| Travel | 3x | Bonus category |
| Streaming | 1x | Base rate |
| Everything else | 1x | Everything else |
Brand and bonus rates: beyond the everyday categories above, this card also earns:
- 10x on hotels and car rentals via Citi Travel portal
Every point and mile above is valued at a flat 1 cent, the same honest standard we use for every card. Run your own spending through the calculator to see what this card would actually return for you.
Pros and cons
- 3x on dining, groceries, gas, and travel, a broad set
- Transferable ThankYou points to airline and hotel partners
- Strong 60,000-point welcome bonus
- Reasonable $95 fee, easy to keep long-term
- $95 annual fee
- Points need transfer partners to beat a penny
- Often overlooked, so fewer people know its value
The welcome bonus
The welcome bonus is excellent: 60,000 points after $4,000 in three months, worth $600 and more through transfers. For a $95 card, that is a great first-year return.
Is it worth the annual fee?
The $95 fee is easy to justify given how many categories earn 3x and that the points are transferable. Between the welcome bonus and the broad earning, this card pays for itself for anyone who spends across those categories, and I would keep it long-term.
First-year value vs ongoing value
| Welcome bonus | 60,000 ThankYou® Points |
| To earn it | $4,000 in 3 months |
| Est. first-year value* | $1,056 |
| Est. ongoing value / yr* | $456 |
The welcome bonus makes year one the high point: roughly $1,056 in value once you count the bonus, this card’s rewards, and its credits, minus the $95 fee. After that, the honest figure is about $456 a year, so judge whether it earns its keep on the ongoing number, not the first-year headline.
*First-year value counts the welcome bonus, estimated rewards, and annual credits, minus the annual fee; ongoing value is a typical year after. Every point at a flat 1 cent, on average spending.
Benefits and protections
Beyond the rewards, the perks and protections worth knowing about include:
- $100 annual hotel savings benefit (off a single hotel stay of $500+ via Citi Travel)
- Points transfer to 18+ airline and hotel partners (JetBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Turkish Miles & Smiles & more)
- No foreign transaction fees
- Trip cancellation/interruption and trip delay insurance
- Lost and damaged luggage protection
- Purchase protection and extended warranty
- World Elite Mastercard benefits and Citi Entertainment® access
Statement credits
This card does not come with recurring statement credits. Its value is in the rewards rate and welcome offer.
Ecosystem and transfer partners
The Citi Strata Premier℠ earns ThankYou Points, one of the more valuable currencies in rewards because of where the points can go. You can move points 1 to 1 to 9 airline and hotel partners: American Airlines AAdvantage, Turkish Miles & Smiles, JetBlue TrueBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Avianca LifeMiles, Air France/KLM, Wyndham Rewards, Choice Privileges, and The Leading Hotels of the World. As a hub card, this is the one you route points through before transferring out. The sweet spots are usually premium-cabin flights and high-end hotel nights, where a single point can be worth well more than the 1 cent we value it at here.
Airline partners: American Airlines AAdvantage, Turkish Miles & Smiles, JetBlue TrueBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Avianca LifeMiles, Air France/KLM, The Leading Hotels of the World.

If you want a travel card that earns strongly across everyday spending and gives you flexible points, the Strata Premier is a fantastic and often-overlooked choice. Its 3x categories are broader than a lot of competitors, and the transfer partners give real upside.
The only people who should skip it are those who never want to deal with points, who are better off with a flat cash-back card. For everyone else building a points strategy, this is a strong, affordable pick.
