Our review
The Capital One Spark 2% Cash is the middle child of Capital One's business lineup, and for a lot of small businesses it is the right one. It pays a flat 2% on everything with no caps or categories, plus 5% on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Business Travel. The fee is waived the first year and then runs $95.
It sits between the no-fee Spark 1.5% Cash Select and the Spark 2% Cash Plus charge card. Compared with the Plus, you get a true credit card with a preset limit and a lower fee, in exchange for a smaller welcome bonus. And if you also hold a Venture card, the cash back can be turned into transferable miles, which makes it more flexible than a typical flat-rate business card.
Think twice if: your annual business spend is under about $19,000, where the 0.5% edge over a free 1.5% card no longer covers the $95 fee.
Our 7.9 out of 10 rating
Each score weighs the rewards rate, value after the annual fee, welcome offer, points flexibility, and perks, with every point valued at a flat 1 cent. This is our editorial assessment to help you compare cards, not a guarantee of approval or of the value you will get.

Rewards: how it earns
Every purchase earns 2% cash back, with no caps, no categories, and no expiration while the account is open. Hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Business Travel earn 5%. The cash is worth face value on its own, and if you also carry a Venture, Venture X, or Venture Business card you can convert it to Capital One miles at 1 cent per mile and move those to airline and hotel partners. For a business that does not want to think about categories, that is about as good as flat-rate gets.
| Category | Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dining and restaurants | 2% back | Base rate |
| Groceries | 2% back | Base rate |
| Gas | 2% back | Base rate |
| Travel | 2% back | Base rate |
| Streaming | 2% back | Base rate |

Best ways to earn & redeem
Use it as a flat-rate everyday card, since it earns the same on every purchase, and pair it with bonus-category cards for groceries, dining, and travel.
When you cash in, pool the rewards into the issuer transferable points when you also hold an eligible card, then move them to travel partners. We value every point at a flat 1 cent, so treat any transfer upside as a bonus rather than the baseline — see what your points are really worth.
Pros and cons
- Unlimited 2% cash back on everything
- 5% on hotels and rental cars through Capital One Business Travel
- $0 annual fee the first year
- Cash converts to transferable miles with a Venture card
- $95 annual fee after the first year
- High spending requirement for the welcome bonus
- No bonus categories beyond Capital One travel
The welcome bonus
New cardholders earn a $1,000 cash bonus after spending $10,000 in the first 3 months. That is a high bar for a very small business, but if your monthly spend is in that range it is one of the better cash bonuses on a card with a modest fee.
Is it worth the annual fee?
The fee is $0 the first year and $95 after that. At 2% versus the 1.5% on Capital One's free Spark card, you need about $19,000 a year in spending to make up the difference, which most active businesses clear easily.
First-year value vs ongoing value
| Welcome bonus | $1,000 cash bonus |
| To earn it | $10,000 in the first 3 months |
| Est. first-year value* | $1,805 |
| Est. ongoing value / yr* | $805 |
The welcome bonus makes year one the high point: roughly $1,805 in value once you count the bonus, this card’s rewards, and its credits, minus the $95 fee. After that, the honest figure is about $805 a year, so judge whether it earns its keep on the ongoing number, not the first-year headline.
*First-year value counts the welcome bonus, estimated rewards, and annual credits, minus the annual fee; ongoing value is a typical year after. Every point at a flat 1 cent, on average spending.
Benefits and protections
Beyond the rewards, the perks and protections worth knowing about include:
- $1,000 cash bonus after $10,000 in purchases in the first 3 months
- $0 annual fee the first year, then $95
- Free employee cards and virtual card numbers
Statement credits
This card does not come with recurring statement credits. Its value is in the rewards rate and welcome offer.
Ecosystem and transfer partners
The Capital One Spark 2% Cash earns Miles, one of the more valuable currencies in rewards because of where the points can go. On its own it earns flexible points, but paired with a premium Capital One card you can pool them together and unlock 1 to 1 transfers to 7 airline and hotel partners: Air Canada Aeroplan, Turkish Miles & Smiles, Avianca LifeMiles, Flying Blue (Air France/KLM), Singapore Airlines, British Airways, and Wyndham Rewards. As an earner, its job is to rack up points cheaply that you move to a hub card before transferring. The sweet spots are usually premium-cabin flights and high-end hotel nights, where a single point can be worth well more than the 1 cent we value it at here.

Get the Spark 2% Cash if your business spends steadily across many categories and you want one card that earns 2% on all of it. It is a strong pick for businesses that also hold a Venture card, since the cash converts to transferable miles.
Skip it if your spending is light, where the free Spark 1.5% Cash Select nets you more after the fee, or if you spend heavily in a few categories that a bonus-category business card would reward better.
