Our review
The U.S. Bank Business Essentials Plus Visa Signature is the premium version of U.S. Bank's new business cash card. It earns 2% on everything, 5% on your single top eligible category each month on up to $200,000 a year, and 10% on prepaid hotels and car rentals booked in the U.S. Bank Travel Center. The price of entry is a $295 annual fee.
The 5% category is chosen for you automatically each month from a list that fits real business spending: accounting and tax services, airlines, cell phone providers, dining, entertainment, office supply stores, postal and shipping, and utilities. With qualifying U.S. Bank checking balances, the base rate climbs as high as 3.5%.
Think twice if: you would not spend enough in a single eligible category to earn back the $295 fee, since the free Business Essentials card already pays 2% on everything.
Our 7.2 out of 10 rating
Each score weighs the rewards rate, value after the annual fee, welcome offer, points flexibility, and perks, with every point valued at a flat 1 cent. This is our editorial assessment to help you compare cards, not a guarantee of approval or of the value you will get.

Rewards: how it earns
The base rate is 2% on every purchase. Each month, your single highest-spend eligible category earns 5% instead, on up to $200,000 a year, and prepaid hotels and car rentals in the U.S. Bank Travel Center earn 10%. U.S. Bank business checking customers can push the base rate to 2.5%, 3%, or 3.5% depending on their balances. The math is simple: the extra 3% on your top category has to cover the fee, which takes roughly $10,000 a year in that category.
| Category | Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dining and restaurants | 2% back | Base rate |
| Groceries | 2% back | Base rate |
| Gas | 2% back | Base rate |
| Travel | 2% back | Base rate |
| Streaming | 2% back | Base rate |
| Office supplies | 2% back | Base rate |
| Phone and internet bills | 2% back | Base rate |
| Shipping | 2% back | Base rate |
| Everything else | 2% back | Everything else |
Brand and bonus rates: beyond the everyday categories above, this card also earns:
- 10% cash back on prepaid hotels and car rentals booked in the U.S. Bank Travel Center
The fine print on rates: The 5% applies automatically to your single top eligible category each month (accounting and tax services, airlines, cell phone providers, dining, entertainment, office supply stores, postal and shipping, or utilities), on up to $200,000 a year; everything else earns 2%. Qualifying U.S. Bank business checking balances raise the base rate to 2.5%, 3%, or 3.5%.
Every point and mile above is valued at a flat 1 cent, the same honest standard we use for every card. Run your own spending through the calculator to see what this card would actually return for you.
Best ways to earn & redeem
Use it as a flat-rate everyday card, since it earns the same on every purchase, and pair it with bonus-category cards for groceries, dining, and travel.
When you cash in, take the rewards as cash back or a statement credit, worth a flat 1 cent each. We value every point at a flat 1 cent, so treat any transfer upside as a bonus rather than the baseline — see what your points are really worth.
Pros and cons
- 5% on your top eligible category each month, up to $200,000 a year
- 2% on everything else
- 10% on prepaid hotels and car rentals through U.S. Bank
- Base rate up to 3.5% with U.S. Bank checking
- $295 annual fee
- Only one category earns 5% each month
- Large spending requirement for the welcome bonus
The welcome bonus
New cardholders earn $1,000 cash back after spending $15,000 in the first 150 days. It is a large bonus with a large spending bar, aimed squarely at businesses that run real volume through their card.
Is it worth the annual fee?
The $295 annual fee is the hurdle. You need about $10,000 a year in your top eligible category for the extra 3% to pay for it, or large U.S. Bank checking balances to boost the base rate. Below that, the free Business Essentials card is the better deal.
First-year value vs ongoing value
| Welcome bonus | $1,000 cash back |
| To earn it | $15,000 in the first 150 days |
| Est. first-year value* | $1,605 |
| Est. ongoing value / yr* | $605 |
The welcome bonus makes year one the high point: roughly $1,605 in value once you count the bonus, this card’s rewards, and its credits, minus the $295 fee. After that, the honest figure is about $605 a year, so judge whether it earns its keep on the ongoing number, not the first-year headline.
*First-year value counts the welcome bonus, estimated rewards, and annual credits, minus the annual fee; ongoing value is a typical year after. Every point at a flat 1 cent, on average spending.
Benefits and protections
Beyond the rewards, the perks and protections worth knowing about include:
- Up to 3.5% total cash back with qualifying U.S. Bank business checking balances
- $1,000 cash back after $15,000 in purchases in the first 150 days
- $295 annual fee
Statement credits
This card does not come with recurring statement credits. Its value is in the rewards rate and welcome offer.
Who should get it, and who should skip it
Get the Business Essentials Plus if your business spends heavily in one eligible category every month, like shipping, airfare, or utilities, and you will clear the fee easily. It gets better still if you keep large balances in U.S. Bank business checking.
Skip it if your spending is spread thin. The no-fee Business Essentials Visa earns the same 2% base without the $295 fee.
