Our review

The Aer Lingus Visa is another Avios-earning card, essentially a sibling of the British Airways and Iberia cards, since all three earn the shared Avios currency. It leans toward travelers who fly Aer Lingus to Europe, but the Avios themselves work across the whole ecosystem.

As with the other Avios cards, you can earn this currency through flexible-points transfers, so the co-brand card is really for dedicated Avios collectors after the welcome bonus.

Best for: Avios collectors, especially those who fly Aer Lingus to Europe, chasing the welcome bonus.
Think twice if: you do not specifically collect Avios, since flexible-points programs can feed the same currency.

Rewards: how it earns

You earn well on Aer Lingus purchases and travel, in shared Avios. Their value depends on redeeming smartly, particularly on short-haul and partner awards, so this suits someone with an Avios plan rather than an everyday spender.

Pros and cons

Pros
  • Earns Avios, shared across several airlines
  • Large 75,000-Avios welcome bonus
  • Useful for Aer Lingus flights to Europe
Cons
  • Avios locked to that airline ecosystem
  • You can earn Avios via flexible-points transfers instead
  • $95 annual fee

The welcome bonus

The welcome bonus is strong: 75,000 Avios after $5,000 in three months, a big haul and the main reason to get the card.

Is it worth the annual fee?

The $95 fee is reasonable for an active Avios collector, and Aer Lingus cards carry a companion-style perk at high spend. Without an Avios strategy, though, the fee is hard to justify.

First-year value vs ongoing value

Welcome bonus75,000 Avios
To earn it$5,000 in 3 months
Est. first-year value*$983
Est. ongoing value / yr*$233

The welcome bonus makes year one the high point: roughly $983 in value once you count the bonus, this card’s rewards, and its credits, minus the $95 fee. After that, the honest figure is about $233 a year, so judge whether it earns its keep on the ongoing number, not the first-year headline.

*First-year value counts the welcome bonus, estimated rewards, and annual credits, minus the annual fee; ongoing value is a typical year after. Every point at a flat 1 cent, on average spending.

Benefits and protections

Beyond the rewards, the perks and protections worth knowing about include:

  • Reward flight statement credits (up to $100 economy, $200 business) up to 3x a year
  • No foreign transaction fees

Statement credits

This card does not come with recurring statement credits. Its value is in the rewards rate and welcome offer.

Who should get it, and who should skip it

If you collect Avios and fly Aer Lingus or its partners, this card is a solid way to build a balance, and the welcome bonus is generous.

If you have no Avios plan, you can earn the same points through transferable cards with more flexibility. This is a card for collectors, not casual flyers.

Pairs well with

The Aer Lingus Visa Signature® Card earns the most in its bonus categories, so pair it with a no-fee flat-rate card to cover everything it only earns a base rate on.
