The short answer: Lisbon was a European bargain until a tourism boom pushed central cash rates up, so points now pay off here. Marriott, Hilton, and IHG hold the most useful properties, reached with Amex, Chase, or Bilt.
From bargain to pricey
Lisbon spent years as one of the cheaper capitals in Western Europe, but a tourism and digital-nomad boom has pushed central cash rates well up, especially from late spring through early fall. That shift is what makes points worthwhile here now: rates that used to be easy to pay in cash increasingly justify an award night instead.
Marriott, Hilton, and IHG hold the most useful central Lisbon properties. Reach Marriott with Amex, Chase, or Bilt, Hilton with Amex or Bilt, and IHG with Chase or Bilt, so an Amex plus a Chase or Bilt card covers the city.
Are Lisbon hotels still cheap?
Less than they used to be. A tourism and remote-work boom has pushed central cash rates up, especially in summer, so points increasingly beat paying cash for a well-located Lisbon hotel.
