Our review
The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless is the workhorse mid-tier Marriott card: a $95 fee, a big welcome bonus, and an annual free night that can be worth more than the fee itself. If you stay at Marriott properties regularly, the anniversary free night usually pays for the card on its own.
Like any co-brand card, the points are locked to Marriott and worth less than transferable currency, so this is a card for Marriott loyalists, not a general earner.
Think twice if: you do not stay at Marriott, since the points are locked to their program and the free night only helps their guests.
Our 7.3 out of 10 rating
Each score weighs the rewards rate, value after the annual fee, welcome offer, points flexibility, and perks, with every point valued at a flat 1 cent. This is our editorial assessment to help you compare cards, not a guarantee of approval or of the value you will get.

Rewards: how it earns
You earn strong points at Marriott and 3x on dining, groceries, and gas up to a cap, then a base rate. The everyday categories are fine, but Marriott points are worth less than transferable points, so I would not use this for general spending, just for Marriott stays and to hold the free night. You can also get Marriott points by transferring from Amex or Chase, so weigh that too.
| Category | Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dining and restaurants | 3x | Bonus category |
| Groceries | 3x | Bonus category |
| Gas | 3x | Bonus category |
| Travel | 1x | Base rate |
| Streaming | 1x | Base rate |
| Everything else | 2x | Everything else |
Brand and bonus rates: beyond the everyday categories above, this card also earns:
- 6x Marriott Bonvoy points at Marriott portfolio hotels
Every point and mile above is valued at a flat 1 cent, the same honest standard we use for every card. Run your own spending through the calculator to see what this card would actually return for you.
Best ways to earn & redeem
Put your dining, groceries, and gas spending on this card to earn at its highest rates, and let a different card handle the categories it does not bonus.
When you cash in, redeem the miles or points inside the single loyalty program this card is tied to. We value every point at a flat 1 cent, so treat any transfer upside as a bonus rather than the baseline — see what your points are really worth.
Pros and cons
- Annual free night that can exceed the fee
- Large 125,000-point welcome bonus plus a free night
- 3x on dining, groceries, and gas
- Automatic elite status boost with Marriott
- Points are locked to Marriott and worth less than transferable points
- $95 annual fee
- Little value if you do not stay at Marriott
The welcome bonus
The welcome bonus is strong: 125,000 points plus a free night award after $3,000 in three months. That is a big pile of Marriott points, easily worth several stays, and the main reason to grab the card in year one.
Is it worth the annual fee?
The $95 fee is easy to justify because of the annual free night award, which can be worth more than $95 if you use it on a decent property. As long as you actually redeem that free night each year, the card pays for itself, which is why it is an easy keep for a Marriott regular.
First-year value vs ongoing value
| Welcome bonus | 125,000 points + 1 Free Night Award (up to 50,000 pts) |
| To earn it | $3,000 in 3 months |
| Est. first-year value* | $2,326 |
| Est. ongoing value / yr* | $576 |
The welcome bonus makes year one the high point: roughly $2,326 in value once you count the bonus, this card’s rewards, and its credits, minus the $95 fee. After that, the honest figure is about $576 a year, so judge whether it earns its keep on the ongoing number, not the first-year headline.
*First-year value counts the welcome bonus, estimated rewards, and annual credits, minus the annual fee; ongoing value is a typical year after. Every point at a flat 1 cent, on average spending.
Benefits and protections
Beyond the rewards, the perks and protections worth knowing about include:
- 1 Free Night Award each anniversary (up to 35,000 points)
- Automatic Silver Elite Status + 15 Elite Night Credits annually
- Path to Gold Elite Status with $35k annual spend
- No foreign transaction fees
- Trip cancellation/interruption insurance
- Lost luggage reimbursement and baggage delay insurance
- Purchase protection and extended warranty
Statement credits
This card does not come with recurring statement credits. Its value is in the rewards rate and welcome offer.
Who should get it, and who should skip it
If you stay at Marriott a few times a year, the Boundless is a sensible card, the anniversary free night covers the fee, the welcome bonus is generous, and you build toward more stays.
If Marriott is not your chain, skip it, the locked points and hotel-specific perks will not do much for you, and a transferable-points card gives you more flexibility. This is a loyalist card, plain and simple.
