Overview

The bp rewards Visa is the most usable of the branded gas cards, because it actually works anywhere Visa is accepted and earns a real 3x on groceries, dining, and food delivery that redeems for cash back. In a lot of ways it is a decent everyday card wearing a gas-card costume.

But the headline, the fuel savings, is locked to bp and Amoco stations, so the thing that makes it a gas card only helps you if you fill up there. Judge it on the 3x categories, not the pump discount, and it holds up better than most of its branded peers.

Best for: bp and Amoco regulars who also want 3x on groceries and dining with flexible cash-back redemption.
Think twice if: you do not fill up at bp, since the fuel savings, the whole point of a branded gas card, only apply there.

Rewards: how it earns

You earn 5x points on non-fuel purchases at bp and Amoco, 3x on groceries, dining, and food delivery, and 1x on everything else. The 3x categories are genuinely useful and, unlike most branded gas cards, the points redeem for cash back, statement credit, or gift cards, so they are not trapped. The fuel discount, 50 cents a gallon for 60 days then 15 cents, is bp and Amoco only.

The fine print on rates: A co-branded Visa that works anywhere Visa is accepted, but the headline fuel savings only apply at bp and Amoco stations. Points redeem for cash back, statement credit, or gift cards.

Every point and mile above is valued at a flat 1 cent, the same honest standard we use for every card. Run your own spending through the calculator to see what this card would actually return for you.

Pros and cons

Pros
  • Works anywhere Visa is accepted
  • 3x on groceries, dining, and food delivery
  • Points redeem for cash back, not just fuel
  • No annual fee
Cons
  • Fuel savings only apply at bp and Amoco
  • 5x is limited to bp/Amoco purchases
  • Without bp loyalty, a plain 3x card does the same job

The welcome bonus

The welcome is a fuel intro rather than a lump sum: 50 cents off per gallon at bp and Amoco for your first 60 days. Nice if you drive and fill up at bp, worth nothing if you do not.

Is the annual fee worth it?

There is no annual fee, so there is nothing to justify. If bp is your station, the fuel savings plus the 3x categories make it a fine free card. If not, you are really just holding a 3x grocery and dining card, which plenty of no-fee cards match without the gas gimmick.

Benefits and protections

Beyond the rewards, the perks and protections worth knowing about include:

  • Fuel savings at bp & Amoco: 50¢/gal for the first 60 days, then 15¢/gal
  • Points redeem for cash back, statement credit, bp gift cards, or retailer gift cards

Statement credits

This card does not come with recurring statement credits. Its value is in the rewards rate and welcome offer.

Who should get it, and who should skip it

If you fill up at bp or Amoco and want a card that also earns solid rewards on groceries and dining, this is the branded gas card I would actually consider, mostly because the rewards are flexible and it works everywhere.

If bp is not your station, skip the gas angle entirely and get a no-fee card that earns the same 3x on groceries and dining. The fuel discount is the only reason to prefer this one, and it is useless away from bp.
